JOB SUMMARY: This Advanced Practitioner, in concert with the physician will perform diagnostic and therapeutic tasks leading to a team-based, physician-directed therapeutic plan of care, assimilate and interprets data; including history, physical examination, laboratory and radiographic diagnostic tests. This data will be communicated to the attending physician in a reliable and concise fashion, provide continuity of care and advocacy for patients, serve as liaison between physicians and patients, meet the qualifications to provide care for patients of all ages. Essential functions include, but are not limited to the following: MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: *1. To assist the surgeon in the preoperative care and workup of patients to include: a. Performs and records history and physical examinations. b. Executes and relays medical regimens as directed by the supervising physician and/or as described in the work agreement between the physician assistant and the supervising physician. c. Confirms operating schedules; summarize appropriate data prior to surgery.
*2. To participate in the postoperative care of patients, being especially knowledgeable in the recognition of postoperative complications. a. Informs the surgeon of all changes in the patient's condition. b. Collects data and writes pertinent progress notes on the charts. c. Summarizes details of patient's hospitalization. d. Makes routine rounds as directed by the surgeon *3. As indicated by his/her training and experience, performs therapeutic procedures as directed by the surgeon *4. Acts as first or second assistant in surgery under the supervision of the surgeon.
*5. Assists the surgeon with correspondence.
6. Keeps the surgeon and Department Chairman informed as to additional needs, problem areas, and all other suggestions which may be beneficial to the improvement of the department.
7. Responsible for continuing medical education and attend appropriate in-house conferences.
*8. Participates in on-call rotation when necessary.
9. Performs all additional duties assigned. 10. Coordinates patient are needs with the physicians 11. Assist with research projects, including protocol development, and data gathering - In concert with physician, orders laboratory and diagnostic testing, consultations and medications.
- Manages patients admitted for observation as well as patients admitted for intensive therapy. Initiates CPR, and administration of vasoactive medication fluids, anti-arrhythmic agents, and other lifesaving medications in the event of an emergency. Manages patients in shock requiring hemodynamic monitoring and vasopressors.
- Performs invasive procedures including insertion of arterial lines, central venous catheters, thoracentesis, paracentesis, chest tube insertion, lumbar puncture, and other procedures as appropriate.
- Performs and records H&P’s.
- Completion of medical records and documentation in a timely manner.
COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS: Must obtain and maintain BLS, demonstrate computer literacy, accurate and timely charting via Electronic Medical Record (EMR). EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: The successful Physician Assistant candidate will work under the responsibility and supervision of the physician and requires completion of an ARC-PA (or predecessor organization) approved physician assistant program, current NCCPA certification or eligibility and Pennsylvania State licensure.
