The University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair of the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health.
As one of the first family medicine departments in the nation, the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health is committed to improving the health and well-being of the people of Wisconsin and the nation. Recognizing that 80 percent of the factors that determine health outcomes are outside of direct clinical care, the department officially changed its name to incorporate “Community Health” in 2015. Through its fifty-year history of partnerships with physicians, teachers, communities, and health systems across the state, the department and its residency graduates advanced the availability of local, accessible health care for Wisconsin families, embodying the “Wisconsin Idea”.
The FY20 annual operating budget for the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health is nearly $68 million which includes a funded research portfolio of nearly $7.8 million. Personnel include 261 core faculty and staff, with an additional 253 clinical adjunct faculty statewide. Two-thirds of the department’s graduating residents have entered practice in Wisconsin. The department offers fellowships in academic family medicine, addiction medicine, integrative health, primary care research, and primary care sports medicine (with Pediatrics). Patient care extends across 17 statewide clinics, with approximately 360,000 patient visits (150,000 patient panel) annually.
Research strengths include the prevention and treatment of substance abuse, infectious disease surveillance and systems-engineering approaches for improving ambulatory care. The department houses Wisconsin Research and Education Network (WREN), a statewide practice-based research network.
The successful candidate will have a compelling vision for the future of family medicine and community health at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health. S/he will model a high level of professionalism and empathy, and apply collaborative approaches to team-building throughout a geographically disperse unit. Applicants must have a MD, MD/PhD, DO or equivalent degree(s); Board Certification; and eligibility for a Wisconsin Medical License. The incumbent must also have a substantial record of achievement in administrative leadership, clinical care, teaching across the full continuum of learners, and a strong academic background that would qualify for appointment as a tenured professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Please send nominations to: Elizabeth Trowbridge, MD and Maureen Durkin, PhD, DrPH, Co-Chairs of the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health Chair Search Committee, c/o Benjamin Schultz-Burkel, DMA, 4299C HSLC, 750 Highland Avenue, Madison, WI, 53705-2111, email@example.com.
