Duke Life Flight is a comprehensive air and ground critical care transport program serving the communities of NC and surrounding states. We have both an adult transport team and a pediatric/neonatal transport team. Our team is active in delivering exemplary care for each patient to enure excellent patient experience, every time.

General Description of the Job Class
The Clinical Lead RN is a role developed to work in coordination with the nursing leadership in an assigned unit or department to ensure the work is accomplished effectively. The Clinical Lead RN is the first line support for staff, physicians and other related providers on service- specific clinical issues. The Clinical Lead RN is generally a long-term role, requiring clinical and interpersonal skills. The Clinical Lead RN collaborates with the manager on clinical and non-clinical issues (employee relations, individual behaviors, physician relationships, etc.). The Clinical Lead RN is the support for the unit/department/service when the manager is unavailable. The Clinical Team Leader is responsible for supervising, directing, coaching, evaluating and mentoring their assigned core group of staff.
Duties and Responsibilities of this Level
Duties and responsibilities include all those required of the CN III as well as:
Plan and coordinate clinical requirements for staff and ensure that all CBO and CBE requirements for staff are current.
Plan and assist with coordination of unit staff schedules and submit for manager approval.
Coordinate clinical requirements with staff regarding equipment and supplies.
Consult with preceptors and orientees on a regular basis to provide support and determine how orientation should proceed on an individual basis.
Collaborate with the manager for issue resolutions and projects to improve work flow processes throughout the department utilizing a proactive approach.
Collaborate with different departments (cardiology, medicine, trauma and other service lines appropriate to Life Flight patient care populations pharmacy, radiology, lab, registration) to resolve issues and improve work flow processes throughout the department.
Collaborate with the nurse managers in the interview process for new applicants.
Mentor/coach staff to enhance their professional development and clinical ladder advancement
Assesses the performance of assigned new hires and orientees including newly hired nurses, paramedics and respiratory therapists provides ongoing feedback and coaching in conjunction with Unit Educator.
Understand and communicate potential clinical equipment or supply issues to appropriate team members (Materials, Biomed, Sterile Processing, etc).
Mentor and monitor the preceptors for all new employees.
Provide clinical/education updates and skill check-offs in conjunction with Unit Educator to entire staff on a regular basis.
Provides immediate support and education on policy, procedures, equipment and supplies.
Responsible for learning, implementing and teaching new technology/procedures.
Demonstrates awareness of current problems and basic plan for all patients within assigned area.
Provides clinical consultation and guidance as needed to facilitate patient care.
Gives assistance and/or direction to staff to facilitate quality patient flow.
Assess staffing needs according to workload and staff competency; Re- assigns and adjusts staffing based upon patient care needs.
Delegates responsibilities within the scope of practice and validated competencies in order to meet the workload demands of the shift.
Facilitates assignments that support learning for the all discipline orientees.
Promotes an atmosphere of open communication that facilitates staff input into decision-making, resolution of conflict, and collegiality among all health team members.
Communicates in an effective, professional manner.
Facilitates staff performance audits related to attitude, team performance, The Joint Commission, DFS Standards and SCIP initiatives.
Reviews and comments on forwarded SRSs related to their team or shift.
Facilitates and encourages staff participation in departmental and hospital committee and council meetings.
Attends departmental and hospital committee meetings as assigned.
Coordinates, facilitates, participates and directs departmental projects with follow-through and appropriate follow-up.
Collaborate with Life Flight Medical Directors and Unit Educator to develop clinical review education for staff as well as clinical QA plans
Other projects and duties as directed by the department managers
Knowledge, Skills, Education, and Experience Required:
Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing required
Selected candidates must meet the Clinical Ladder requirements for CN III within one year of appointment.
At least 3 years of Critical Care/Emergency Transport experience.
Previous management, leadership, committee work preferred.
Knowledge of scope of the registered nurse, paramedic and respiratory therapist.
Knowledge of and appropriate application of the nursing process
Knowledge of professional theory, practice and procedure
Ability to assess nursing needs of acute and chronically ill patients and their families
Able to independently seek out resources and work collaboratively
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
Able to communicate clearly with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team, physicians, administrators, leadership and others
Able to teach patients and families in accordance with the nursing plan of care
Able to use sensory and cognitive functions to process and prioritize information, treatment, and follow-up
Able to use fine motor skills
Competent in BLS and/or other specialized life support requirements designated by work area
Able to record activities, document assessments, plan of care, interventions, evaluation and re-evaluation of patient status
Able to use computer and learn new software programs
Able to navigate the entity to provide clinical care for patients
Able to withstand prolonged standing and walking
Able to remain focused and organized
Working knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in administering routine and special treatments to patients
Licensure, Certification or Registration Required:
Current registration with North Carolina State Board of Nursing as a registered professional nurse OR current compact RN licensure to practice in the state of North Carolina required.
BLS (or higher) certification required.
Professional specialty certification required upon hire
ACLS, NRP, Advanced Trauma and PALS certification upon hire.
